Panel description
As African nations strive to achieve Universal Health Coverage, the gap between national health priorities and available international development finance remains a critical bottleneck. Organized by the Leiden Political Economy Group in collaboration with the CENDARA Foundation, this talk explores the political economy of health infrastructure in Africa, using the Republic of Liberia as a primary case study. Drawing on Liberia’s unique experience rebuilding its state healthcare system after a protracted civil war and the 2014–2016 Ebola epidemic, distinguished government officials and academic experts will discuss the intersection of national priorities, international funding mechanisms, and on-the-ground implementation. The discussion will highlight how, against the backdrop of financing challenges, platforms like CENDARA could help bridge the coordination gap between African governments and European Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) to create sustainable, and community-owned health systems.
The event will be followed by a small reception.
