About the course Foundations of Law and Society
This course is the starting point of the master Law and Society. You will be introduced to the main theoretical perspectives within socio-legal studies and explore key issues regarding the relationship between law and society. Three central questions guide the course: how does law in the books differ from law in action? How do law and legal institutions influence social relations and the distribution of power in society? And how do social relations and existing power structures shape the emergence and change of laws and institutions? The course provides the foundation for more specialised courses in the master and introduces you to the lecturers and research areas involved.

About the master Law and Society
The master Law and Society is a one-year, English-taught and interdisciplinary programme in which you study how law and society influence each other. You will learn to analyse the gap between written law and law in practice, and you will address pressing issues such as migration, climate change, inequality, corruption and social justice. The programme is small-scale and international, bringing together students and lecturers from all over the world. It is offered by the Van Vollenhoven Institute (VVI) in cooperation with other faculties and international partners.
