Helping Hand: Mutual Aid Group for Disabled and Chronically Ill Students

Helping Hand is a project funded by the JEDI fund of the Humanities Faculty, aiming to bring together Chronically Ill and Disabled students to meet, create community and mutual support.

This project means to bring together the community of disabled and chronically ill students and center our experiences, grievances and joy while studying. There are two components to the project: monthly covid-safe, hybrid meetings and the possibility for requesting (peer or financial) support with any medical or disabilityrelated matters.

While the project is funded through the JEDI fund of the Humanities Faculty, any students are welcome to join! You can sign up via the form below, for either one or multiple of our meetings, or to be included in our newsletter. We also have a WhatsApp groupchat you are welcome to join!

On one Saturday a month, we meet in the ESN Common Room, in the Beehive (Turfmarkt, 104, Den Haag) and online. These meetings are a space for disabled and chronically ill experiences to be shared, as well as providing a COVID-safe environment* for those attending, including the possibility to join online. The hybridity of the meetings will allow students to also interact if they choose to stay online.

* Therefore wearing a medical face mask is required

Non-disabled people are welcome to join, but not to use this as a space to learn and de-construct their ableism, but rather to support other students. The experiences and needs of disabled and chronically ill students will be prioritised in our space.

Through the project, students can also request assistance for any and all disability, illness or medical-related issues, such as help translating prescription, requesting company to an important appointment, or any other matters! The project can also help reimburse transportation costs for a peer. If you would like to request support, please send an email to helpinghand@hum.leidenuniv.nl, and they will arrange the logistics with you.
