Dutch election shows renewed support for pro-european politics

Dimiter Toshkov, Associate Professor at the Institute of Public Administration, told CGTN Europe that the Dutch election outcome reflects growing support for pragmatic and pro-European politics. He highlights D66’s focus on education, climate policy and European cooperation as key to its strong performance.

With nearly all votes counted, liberal Democrats 66 (D66) narrowly lead Geert Wilders’ far-right Party for Freedom (PVV). According to Dimiter Toshkov, D66’s results show voters’ preference for constructive, future-oriented governance. He argues that ‘making a stronger pro-European position in Brussels, but also voicing a more pro-European position here in The Hague, is another priority,’ Toshkov explained. ‘Education has also been central to D66’s agenda, promising to reverse and stop the cutdowns in the educational sector.’

Toshkov noted that coalition negotiations could take months, but the outcome signals that Dutch voters are turning away from populist rhetoric towards pragmatic and cooperative policymaking.
