ONS Leiden again main student party in University Council

Student party ONS Leiden again has an overall majority in the student body of the University Council (UR). The party won 55% of the votes, representing five of the eight seats - including the residual seat. There was no election this year for the staff section of the UR.

ONS Leiden gains more votes seats

ONS Leiden (Enterprising Leiden Students) took part last year for the first time under this new name, having changed its name from SGL (Leiden Student Party). At the same time the only BeP member (Aware and Progressive) transferred to ONS Leiden, which meant the end of BeP. ONS Leiden managed to strengthen its position: from 55 to 55.6% of the votes.

CSL loses seats

The gains made by ONS Leiden were at the cost of the Leiden Christian Student Party (CSL), which surrendered almost 1% of the votes (now 17.5%) but retained its seat. The Progressive Students Party (LVS) increased its position (by 0.3% to 26.9%), also at the cost of CSL. LVS retained its two seats.

All parties also had candidates on their list from The Hague at the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs.

Increased turnout

The turnout this year was 3.9% higher than in 2016: 23.6% of the students voted. The percentage of preferential votes was also higher: 21.9% in comparison with 18.7% last year.
