Take a Leiden look around the globe

Over 300 students from Leiden University sent in a photo for the Study Abroad Photo Competition 2016-2017. From all across the globe the most beautiful pictures came in. The three winning photographers tell us about their picture, and their time spent abroad.

1st Place: Isabel  Barnhoorn

On exchange to McGill University, Canada, during her Bachelor programme at Leiden University College

This is my favorite picture of my time abroad at McGill University in Montréal. It’s a picture taken in front of McGill’s iconic main building, with snow in the background, with my Australian friend, both representing the school, the international friends I have gained, and the intense cold I have experienced while being there! Fun fact: to get the perfect shot we had to briefly take off our coats on this -20 degrees Celsius day, talk about dedication!

2nd Place: Bart van der Meer

On exchange to Stellenbosch University, South Africa, during his BA International Studies programme

Stellenbosch University gave us a week off from studying to explore South Africa. So together with three other exchange students, we decided to drive along the Garden Route to visit the national parks and explore the coastal towns. On the map we found out about a place called Oyster Bay, where it was possible to go sandboarding. After driving a long way on the worst road you can imagine, walking through a field with horses and crossing a small river, we arrived at the dunes of Oyster Bay, where we spent the rest of the day sandboarding.

3rd Place: Anna Hommel

On exchange to Seoul National Univeristy, South Korea, during her Bachelor programme at Leiden University College

This photo perfectly captures my exchange experience at Seoul National University. Due to SNU's incredible buddy system, I had an amazing friend group who showed me around Korean culture. Here we are exploring the traditional city of Jeonju, wearing traditional school uniforms. It is one of my fondest memories: walking around in the beautiful city, dressed up in funny clothes, chatting with new friends and learning new things. This group of people made me feel at home right away. They might be the reason why I decided to go back to SNU fulltime as a grad student...

A larger selection of the wonderful submissions to the Study Abroad photo contest is on display on the ground floor at Plexus student centre.
