First SCOLAS conference organized by Latin American Studies at Leiden
June 2018 saw the inauguration of a new research-led initiative within Latin American Studies at Leiden. The first international SCOLAS conference brought together undergraduate and postgraduate students who wished to present their research to a multidisciplinary and international audience. The conference showcased research undertaken in BA theses as well as Master, Research Master and PhD dissertations, within the three disciplinary areas that Latin American Studies covers: Cultural Analysis, Linguistics, History.
Sharing plans for the future
A full day of inspiring talks and poster presentations allowed for staff and students to gain further insight into the work of around 30 presenters at different stages of their academic careers. Contributions included scholars from other institutions in the Netherlands and abroad. It was very pleasing to see a number of our alumni also present, with some also presenting on their research undertaken at LAS and sharing their plans for the future.
Four inspiring Keynote Speakers
There were contributions by four Keynote Speakers from different areas of study (Linguistics, Cultural Analysis, History and Public Policy). Dr Michael Child (Brigham Young University, US), a former professor in linguistics at LAS, returned to Leiden to speak on bilingual education experiences in the US (English-Portuguese). Dr Adriana Churampi (Leiden/LAS) shared her insight into the construction of stereotypical images of Latin America in contemporary comics. Dr Gabriela Palacio (Leiden/BAIS) spoke about the complexity surrounding public policies and on-going issues of social inclusion in Latin America. Dr Osmer Balan, visiting researcher at Leiden, presented on his fascinating research on languages in contact in Northern Belize.
