LUMC lecturer Arianna Pranger in Lecturer of the Year 2021 final

Hospital pharmacist and lecturer on the master’s programme in pharmacy Arianna Pranger has made it to the final of the Lecturer of the Year 2021 competition. Outgoing minister Van Engelshoven (Education, Culture and Science) will award the prize to the winning lecturer.

Pranger won last year’s Lecturer of the Year prize and has now made it to the national final. The jury has praised the teaching of all four finalists. They have a clear vision, are passionate about their subject, and get this across in an engaging way. Students are lyrical about how committed and enthusiastic these lecturers are. They have managed to keep their students motivated, despite the move to online teaching. The jury also commended the four lecturers for how they have turned the coronavirus crisis into an opportunity to improve their teaching, by coming up with creative new teaching methods, for example. All four are strong advocates of innovation in education, within the scope of their regular teaching duties and beyond.

Example to others

The National Student Association (ISO) is holding its seventh consecutive Lecturer of the Year competition. It aims to draw attention to good teaching in higher education because it believes that lecturers play a major role in this, particularly during the coronavirus crisis. Digitalisation and the physical distance between students and lecturers have dramatically increased lecturers’ influence on the teaching. Those who have responded well to the situation are an example to others. The ISO therefore wants inspiring lecturers to be seen in a positive light, and believes that it is particularly important to show how many excellent lecturers there are at present in higher education.
This year’s final will be held at Jaarbeurs in Utrecht on 21 April 2021 and livestreamed. The finalists will give a presentation showing why they deserve to win the prize and the jury will choose a winner, who will receive the Lecturer of the Year 2021 prize from outgoing minister Van Engelshoven. Alongside the trophy, which will be designed by a student from Amsterdam University of the Arts, the winner will receive a grant for innovation in teaching and will be made a member of the ComeniusNetwerk.
