We can help you when you are unsure about how to tackle studying and we can give advice on who to turn to with your questions. Also, we can direct you to further intellectual challenges and assist in your personal and professional development.

Buddy service

Are you a bachelor or master’s student at the Faculty of Social Sciences (FSW)? Then you can join the buddy system! You can also apply to be a buddy and help others.

For some students, studying may be more challenging than for others. The buddy system is intended for all FSW students who need some help with practical or study-related matters. The buddy system is coordinated by students from the POPcorner and it consists of three different specializations. The First-year buddy system is intended for first-year students who need some extra support from seniors, the International buddy system matches first-year students to senior students and the Barrier-Free Studying system is meant for students with health problems, physical disabilities, or dyslexia. Student Experience: Volunteering

This month, Psychology student Julia Dechering shares her volunteering experience!

‘Volunteering is something I grew up with. My parents were always involved in different types of volunteer work and this is how I got involved as well. My first job was in a day-care, as I wanted to gain some experience in working with children. A few years later, I became a volunteer at a disco for persons with a disability and discovered that this work really suited me. I continued in this line of work and now I volunteer at two different organizations, covering about 80 hours of volunteering spread out over 4 months. Although volunteering is a nice addition to my resume, it is first and foremost an important thing for my personal development. I enjoy meeting new people and I’ve learned a lot about my strengths and weaknesses. Also, volunteering can function as a kind of career hack as you can have a lot of responsibilities when working at smaller organizations. This might be different compared to having a side job, for instance. All-in-all, volunteering is not only fun, but it does also not take up much time in your week and it is very rewarding.''

Would you like to volunteer yourself? Then take a look at the volunteer work page on the LU Career Zone and vacancies on the Leiden University Job Portal!
