Festive opening LAFV and Leiden Law School exhibition: 'Intersection of Art and Science'

On the initiative of Leiden Law School’s Art Committee, the festive opening of the photo exhibition of the Leiden Amateur Photographic Society (LAFV) took place on Friday 20 May 2022 in the C corridor of the Kamerlingh Onnes Building.

Besides photographs by various Leiden photographers, matching haikus can also be admired. These have been written especially for this exhibition by the Leiden Haiku Kring. The theme of this exhibition, 'Intersection of Art and Science', is also relevant in the context of Leiden City of Science 2022.

Present at the opening were staff, students, members of the LAFV, members of the Dutch Haiku Kring and members of other faculty art committees. This cooperation between the LAFV and Leiden Law School will most likely result in an annual exhibition.

The first reactions to the exhibition were positive. Many of those present found the combination of haikus and photographs particularly interesting. ‘The haikus make you study the photos for longer and you discover new things that you would not have noticed at first glance’, said one of those present. The faculty may keep two or three photographs after the exhibition. The Art Committee therefore calls on employees to pass on any preferences by e-mail  (artcommissionlawschool@law.leidenuniv.nl).

While walking through the building towards the C-corridor (beside the OIC), two new acquisitions by the faculty can also be admired. Joost Wensveen, also a member of LAFV, took some special photographs in the Lorentzzaal of the Kamerlingh Onnes Building, the Old Library and in the observatory at the Old Observatory. These have been purchased by the faculty. The photo of the Lorentzzaal has been hung in the Old Observatory and the photos of the library and observatory have been hung in the Kamerlingh Onnes Building. An exchange that symbolises the links between both buildings.

The LAFV exhibition will be on display for two months in the C corridor of the Kamerlingh Onnes Building. External visitors can visit the exhibition on Saturdays and Sundays between 14.00 and 17.00 after registering at the front desk.

The Art Committee is keen to receive ideas, initiatives and input. They can be contacted via the above email address and via the Instagram page @kunstkog. Staff and students can also contact one of the members personally (Pascal LemoineMarian HoeberEmke van BreugelJulie Külsen).

The LAFV is the Leiden Amateur Photographic Society. In 2022 they are celebrating their 100th anniversary. Check out their website for more information: Leidse Amateur Fotografen Vereniging - (lafv.nl). On 11 June they will hold a symposium with the theme ‘Photography meets Science and the City’. It is still possible to register for this event.

The Haiku Kring Leiden is part of the Haiku Kring Nederland. They have been active in Leiden since 2015 and meet a number of times throughout the year to discuss the writing of haikus. More information is available on Kern Leiden - Haiku.nl.
