Maria del Carmen Parafita Couto: ‘I have to speak to my cats in Galician’

In the new video series 'The World of Linguistics', alumni and researchers talk about their passion for their field. University lecturer Maria Del Carmen Parafita Couto speaks about bilingualism.

'I recently got two cats. I have to speak to them in Galician. I can't speak to them in any other language. It comes straight from my heart. In the eighties and nineties, when I went to school, Galician was still stigmatised in the community. It was considered to be a language of farmers and poor people. At school, even though Galician was already co-official with Spanish, some teachers didn't allow us to speak the language.'
