Recap: Summer School ‘The European Union, the United Nations and Global Governance’

From 13 to 24 June 2022, the Summer School on the European Union, the United Nations and Global Governance, supported by the Erasmus+ (Jean Monnet) Programme was held for the second time.

The Summer School was open to Master-level and PhD students and focused on a range of topics relevant to interactions between the European Union (EU) and the United Nations (UN) and the EU’s role within current patterns of global governance. It was initiated by and conducted under the academic leadership of Professor Madeleine Hosli (in collaboration with several colleagues from Leiden University and external experts).

Inspriring lectures

The first part of the Summer School was at Leiden University's Wijnhaven building in The Hague and encompassed a simulation on negotiations in the European Council, and various inspiring lectures by eminent scholars in European Integration, International Organization and Global Governance by Prof. Antoaneta Dimitrova, Prof. Amy Verdun, Prof. Spyros Blavoukos, Prof. Sieglinde Gstoehl, Dr. Ad van Riet, Prof. Simon Schunz, Dr. Susann Handke, Dr. Jaroslaw Kantorowicz, Dr. Joris Larik, Prof. David Howarth, Prof. Irma Mosquera Valderrama, Arash Pourebrahimi, MA and Prof. Madeleine Hosli.

Visit Institutions in The Hague and Brussels

Moreover, the Summer School participants visited the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. The last three days were spent in Brussels, where they visited the European Parliament, the European Commission and the European External Action Service.
