What is there to do at Leiden University in 2023? Six events to look forward to

From sponsored runs to festivals and from open days to concerts: Leiden University hosts all manner of events every year. To make sure these events get the attention they deserve, the newsroom at Leiden University is highlighting six of them.

Musical students

Practicum Musicae students give free concerts in the Lokhorstkerk in Leiden every year. Practicum Musicae is a combined programme for Leiden University students with musical ambitions. For their minor they can take classes at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague and thus also follow musical training alongside their academic programme. The first concert this year is on Thursday 26 January from 17:00 to 18:00.

The favourite artworks of academics from Leiden

To celebrate Leiden University’s birthday, entry to Museum De Lakenhal, as it was last year, thanks to funding from the Municipality of Leiden. This year Leiden academics from different disciplines are also ‘on display’. They will talk about their favourite works from the museum.

Anniversary celebration at Faculty of Archaeology

The Faculty of Archaeology turns 25 this year. To celebrate this anniversary, they are opening their doors on 1 March for anyone wanting to find out more about archaeology. At the Pop-up ArcheoHotspot, you can follow lectures on prehistory, the Roman Empire and the Middle Ages in the Netherlands. You can also take part in workshops on identifying and sorting ceramics, human and animal bones, and plants and seeds.

Sponsored run

On Saturday 15 April fans of running can join in the Leiden Science Run. In this 5km sponsored run, you and a team of four can raise money for the UAF, an organisation that supports refugee students.

Liberation Festival in The Hague

At the Liberation Festival in The Hague on 5 May this year, you can once again visit the HI The Hague Student Area (in Dutch). Together with the universities of applied sciences, Leiden University will have a social lab, a tag wall, an art exhibition and more. Students can also dance, exercise, play games and DJ for free.

Science voor families

The Faculty of Science is opening its doors on 11 November for those who do not regularly enter the grounds of Leiden University. At Leiden Science Family Day, young and old can enjoy fascinating experiments, guided tours, interesting lectures, spectacular nitrogen shows and various workshops.
