Registration still open: lecture series on crisis governance starts Friday

The lecture series on the Dutch crisis governance system will start on Friday. Lector in crisis management at the NIPV (Netherlands Institute for Public Safety) Menno van Duin kicks off and provides us with a sneak preview of the first lecture.

What is the lecture ‘The Dutch crisis management system: what can we learn from it? about?

Menno van Duin: 'We discuss the specifics of the structure and the organisation of disaster response and crisis management in our country. We examine this at both local and regional level. How are these issues written down in laws and regulations, and what does this mean in practice? Concepts that will be discussed include disaster and crisis; GRIP and scaling up; overall and dedicated chains.'

What practical example of a crisis will you certainly be covering?

Van Duin: 'I'm going to talk about the shipping container calamity on the Wadden Sea. We will also discuss some mini-crises and I assume the corona crisis will also be covered.'

What would you like the participants to remember afterwards?

Van Duin: 'I hope the structure will have been made clear. In particular, its strengths and weaknesses. I also hope that some key concepts will stick.'

You can read information about the other lectures here:

Lector Crisis Management Menno van Duin, Professor Crisis management and National Safety Peter Bos, Professor in Crisis Governance Sanneke Kuipers, and Assistant Professor of Crisis Governance Jeroen Wolbers will guide you past the most importance structures, chains, administrative networks, and spontaneous coordination structures. In three consecutive lectures they will use their own personal experiences to discuss the state of Dutch crisis governance.

You can register for the lecture series (in Dutch) using this form.

Collaboration NIPV and ISGA

The lecture series is the result of a collaboration between both knowledge institutes in the field of research and education. It is a unique opportunity for students from the bachelor Security Studies and the master Crisis & Security Management to learn about the ins & outs of the Dutch crisis management landscape. Professionals working in the field are also expressly invited to participate. This will allow for an interesting mix of students and experts. The lecture series will therefore be conducted in Dutch.
