Take a sneak peek at the new Gorlaeus building

Want to see how the most important building on our Science Campus at Leiden Bio Science Park is taking shape? Come and find out on Construction Day (Dag van de Bouw) on Saturday 17 June.

On 17 June students, staff and anyone else who might be interested can take a look behind the fences at the impressive Gorlaeus phase 2a with state-of-the-art labs and research facilities for the Faculty of Science.

Phase two of the new Gorlaeus building is still in progress but it is far enough to give a good impression of what it will look like when completed later this year. On Construction Day you will be able to follow a route with information about the different rooms. A virtual reality app will give you a good impression of the interior, making this a truly unique experience. The new building’s facilities will include labs, a brasserie and lecture halls. The main entrance to this part of the building will be on the Campus Square.

Meet, interact and share ideas

Once phase 2a has been completed the Gorlaeus building with its distinctive comb structure and the iconic saucer-shaped lecture hall building will be the ‘face’ of the faculty. Phase 2b will see a further extension on the site of the old LMUY research building, with labs, offices and teaching rooms. Once this last phase has been completed, many of the institutes and faculty services will be under one roof with a floor area of an impressive 100,000 square metres. This new set-up will invite people to meet, interact and share ideas.

The Gorlaeus building is part of a transformation of this section of the Leiden Bio Science Park. The adjacent Campus Square (the new Rosalind Franklin Square) will be transformed in the coming years into an attractive meeting place with lawns and seating areas. There will also be a brand-new University Sports Centre (USC) on the other side of the square. A green, covered bicycle shed will be built after the summer on the steel foundations of the former Gorlaeus high-rise between the lecture hall building and the Gorlaeus building. And a little further on, in the adjacent entrance area, 1,100 student flats will be realised.
