Doing more together for less waste
Leiden University wants to contribute to a sustainable society, a healthy climate and the reduction of litter and waste. This intention is in alignment with the introduction of our Pure concept, the integral concept for our catering activities.
With Pure, our daily goal is to make everyone a happy customer. Of course within an environment with attention and responsibility for health, people, the environment and social cohesion.
For example, we no longer use mono packaging and purchasing is being done efficiently to produce even less waste. Our sandwiches are also packaged in sustainable paper packaging. The next step is for the university to strongly reduce the use of disposables.
The Billie Cup, the sustainable cup
That's why Billie Cups are available in the cafes. You can return these cups after use, so that you are not obliged to have this reusable cup with you all day or to take it home. You will receive a coin (Billie Coin) when you return your Billie Cup. In this way, we want to limit the use of disposables as much as possible.
Anyone who still wants to use disposables will pay an environmental contribution from July 1st onwards. The environmental contribution is €0.20 per disposable cup in the cafés and €0.50 per item in the restaurants.
We will use this environmental contribution to invest in more crockery and waste management streams. This is how we invest in a healthier planet together!
In the large hot drinks machines you will soon only be able to use your own cup or a Billie Cup (available in the restaurant or café of the location). This measure will be introduced as soon as possible after July 1st.
