New Governance of Migration and Diversity master’s programme responds to topical issues

From September 2024 onwards, Leiden University’s Europa Institute will teach a new LL.M. programme on the Governance of Migration and Diversity [GMD]. Programme Chair Moritz Jesse says, ‘We need lawyers who are well-informed about the historical, sociological and political background of migration.’

A multidisciplinary focus

This new master’s degree will focus on the legal aspects of migration, asylum, non-discrimination, integration and diversity. Programme Chair Moritz Jesse explains that it also aims to draw on other academic disciplines. ‘We need lawyers who are well-informed about the historical, sociological and political background of migration.’ The curriculum will therefore include legal modules as well as modules in sociology, history and political science.

Response to topical issues

The master’s programme responds to topical issues. ‘The issue of migration dominates the daily political agenda and discussions about Dutch society – it has a very polarising effect,’ says Jesse. ‘Pressure on the EU to tackle migration will remain high – no amount of border closures will remove that pressure. Governance of diversity and migration will remain on the agenda for the foreseeable future.’

Jesse and his colleagues therefore decided that a new multidisciplinary master’s programme was the only proper response to current events. ‘We’re going to teach lawyers to think outside of the box. GMD students will study alongside students from other disciplines and graduate as lawyers with full LL.M. qualifications with civiel effect. [In the Dutch judicial system,‘civiel effect’ confirms that somebody has completed all of the modules required for admission to the Bar or as a trainee judicial officer.]

The curriculum of the new LL.M. consists of legal courses at the law school in Leiden and courses in sociology, history, and political sciences on the governance of migration and diversity at Erasmus University in Rotterdam and the History Faculty in Leiden as part of the overarching multidisciplinary programme ‘Governance of Migration and Diversity’ [GMD] run by the Universities of Leiden, Delft and Rotterdam [Erasmus].
