The Future of Ethics in Caribbean Archaeology Workshop
From March 11th to 14th, the workshop "The Future of Ethics in Caribbean Archaeology," led by IN THE SAME SEA Postdoctoral Fellow Felicia Fricke and her colleagues Eduardo Herrera Malatesta (Århus University, Denmark) and Maaike de Waal (Leiden University, The Netherlands) took place at the Saxo Institute in Copenhagen. Over the course of four days, 30 attendees from all over the world set concrete goals for the ethical development of archaeology in the Caribbean.
The workshop attendees consisted of independent scholars, university researchers, government employees, and postgraduate students from countries including Curaçao, Barbados, Germany, Grenada, Haiti, the Netherlands, Puerto Rico, St. Eustatius, Trinidad and Tobago, the USA, and Venezuela, both in person and online.
There were keynote speeches by Rachel Watkins from American University, DC, discussing community engagement in bioanthropology, and Priscilla Ulguim from Free University Brussels, discussing ethical archaeogaming. At the end of the workshop, participants came up with a plan, assigned tasks, and a name for the community: Coalition for Caribbean Archaeological Heritage.
