Touring exhibition 'Presenting with the city' opened at Lipsius
The touring exhibition 'Presenting with the city' has touched down in the Lipsius Building. In the presentation, students and researchers show how their research has contributed to the city.
The 'Presenting with the city' exhibition is an offshoot of the 'Leren met de stad' project (Learning with the city), in which students from Leiden University, Hogeschool Leiden and mboRijnland work on societal challenges.
Valuable quest
In the exhibition, columns of stacked boxes explain the various projects carried out recently. These include the work of university lecturer Elpine de Boer and her students, who investigated in Leiden-North how cultural and religious factors play a role in asking for help.
Typically Leiden is the 'Traces of Three October' project. With the 450th celebration of The Relief of Leiden in prospect, two history students and two archaeology students delved into the archives to study long-forgotten sources. What exactly happened back then and how can we still see traces of it today?
'As archaeologists and history students, we actually never work together,' says Alexander Nuijten, one of the historians in the project. 'So it was quite a quest to get our ways of working aligned, but I think that was actually very valuable in the end.'
Part of the society
Vice-Dean Jeroen Touwen agrees. The initiative reminds him of the 'revolutionary 1970s' when universities were trying to break free of the classical mould and become more part of the society. 'Just like then, you now suddenly come into contact with Leiden society.'
The Presenting with the City exhibition is on display in the Lipsius Building until 30 April.
