Update Executive Board: Motion to scrap assessment of non-Dutch-taught programmes

The Schoof cabinet has presented its budget. As expected, higher education is facing severe cuts. In the coming period, the Executive Board will regularly look at the consequences of what it deems an irresponsible policy.

On Tuesday 27 May, a motion passed with an overwhelming majority to remove the assessment of current non-Dutch-taught programmes (Toets Anderstalig Onderwijs, TAO) from the Balanced Internationalisation Bill (WIB).

Instead, the House of Representatives has welcomed the universities’ ‘self-governance’ plans to balance internationalisation in a faster, more targeted fashion (see blog updates below, including from 15 and 25 April).

The motion passed – submitted by MPs Krul, Martens-America, Soepboer, Rooderkerk, Ceder, Dassen, Stultiens and Ergin – offers universities much more clarity about the future and attracting international talent. Our society needs that talent now more than ever, but there still issues to address.

As universities, we still face difficult choices as a result of self-governance and the substantial budget cuts. Now it’s up to the minister. We look forward to hearing how he plans to implement the motion.
