Campus The Hague occupied
A group of over a hundred pro-Palestine demonstrators gathered in the Wijnhaven building on Campus The Hague at around 13.00 hrs on Tuesday 6 May. They chanted slogans and hung up banners. The majority of the demonstrators left the building after a short while, but a small number refused to leave.
Face coverings
Some of the group wore face coverings, which is against the university’s house rules. The demonstrators also blocked one or more emergency exits, risking the safety of everyone in the building. The university therefore had to evacuate the building.
Hand over control to police
The individuals occupying the building were asked several times to leave. This is standard procedure. The individuals refused to comply, giving the university no choice but to hand over control of the building to the police. This is also following the rules on building occupations.
Evacuate the building
The police decided to evacuate the building, and did so at around 14.45. They were at the scene early because the protest at Wijnhaven started with an unscheduled street demonstration.
