Exhibition 'Outside the Box': Where law and creativity meet

What happens when students are given the freedom to think outside the box? Honours College Law students got to try it through their 'unessays': an alternative final assignment. Their work will be on display in the KOG until 1 July.

In March 2024, Honours College Law (HC Law) introduced the option of an 'unessay' as a final assignment. The concept is simple: students are given the freedom to complete a course in a different way from writing a traditional essay by creating, for example, a painting, fictional story, vlog, podcast, poster, or (short) play. They accompany their work with a brief reflection, explaining what they made, the ideas behind it and the choices they made during the process. The 'unessay' offers HC Law students the opportunity to step outside the box, encouraging creativity and interdisciplinary thinking.

In just over a year, many students have already completed one of their HC Law courses with an 'unessay'. Time for an exhibition: the icing on the cake for these students and a great opportunity to introduce the rest of the faculty to this unique form of assessment. It’s an invitation to think in a different way, on a critical, imaginative and personal level. The diversity of these projects show how law comes to life beyond the boundaries of the written word.

'Unessays'

The unessay collection showcases final assignments by HC Law students and demonstrates what can happen when the traditional essay is set aside, making space for a personal and creative interpretation of the final project. From 17 June to 1 July, the exhibition will be on display on the landing by the stairs leading to the restaurant. Drop by and discover the world of the unessay!
