Leiden’s Rapenburg canal was transformed into a magical open-air stage for the jubilee edition of the Leiden Canal Concert, as hundreds gathered to celebrate 450 years of Leiden University. The concert featured an orchestra made up of students and staff performing alongside local artists.
The evening flowed from start to finish in host Thomas van Luyn’s capable hands. Elenora Hu (an English Language and Culture alumnus) captivated the audience in boats and along the canal with her beautiful voice, while musical star René van Kooten joined Leiden music company Otis in a musical tribute to student life through the years.
The programme also featured a nod to Campus The Hague with songs about The Hague, a Eurovision medley introduced by alumnus Cornald Maas, and much more. The music was arranged by lecturer Merijn Wijk and conducted by alumnus Guido Marchena.
Law student Christiaan Bauer also took to the stage and soon had the crowd singing along with the Dutch hit ‘Heb je even voor mij’.

Lalala Leiden
Finally, illusionist and alumnus Victor Mids invited Rector Magnificus Hester Bijl onstage for an act that ended with the surprise appearance of none other than Jochem Myjer. He brought the evening to a close with a loud rendition of Lalala Leiden.
