NSE 2025: Students satisfied with study programme, study pressure and support remain important
The NSE (National Student Survey) 2025 was conducted in the first quarter of 2025. Over a quarter of students at Leiden University completed the survey. Students remain satisfied with their study programme, their lecturers, and the atmosphere at their respective study programmes. Student welfare and the connection to the labour market remain important points of attention.
This year, the response to the NSE was below the national average for the first time in years. Nevertheless, a large group of students still gave feedback on their study programme. As such, the NSE provides valuable insights that help us to improve education and student support.
On average, students rated their study programme 3.91 on a scale of 1 to 5. This is a slight increase from last year (3.88), and higher than the national average.
Lecturers and atmosphere remain strong points
Students are again positive about their lecturers, with an average rating of 3.95 which is a slight rise compared to last year. In particular, the approachability and substantive expertise of lecturers are perceived as strong points. Compared to students at other universities, Leiden students are on average slightly more positive about their lecturers.
Satisfaction with the atmosphere at the university also remains as high as ever. With an average score of 4.05 in 2025, which is slightly higher than in previous years. On a national level, a stabilisation of the perception of atmosphere is also visible among students.
Labour market preparation once again a focal point
As in previous years, students indicated that preparation for the labour market could be better. In particular, contact with professional practice scores low (3.18), which is lower than the national average. Skills for professional practice are also rated neutrally.
The university has been working actively for several years to improve the connection with the labour market, for example through initiatives within the framework of our Vision on Teaching, as well as intensified cooperation with the Career Services. The NSE results are an important tool that allow us to monitor where further strengthening is needed and which measures are proving to be effective.
Monitoring results in faculties and programmes
The NSE results will be discussed in the coming period within the study programme committees. Faculty quality assurance staff will analyse the results and prepare proposals for improvements, which will be coordinated with the study programmes and students. The results can found in the Education Dashboard. The study programmes will also communicate all points for improvement and proposed follow-up via the Education Dashboard and a number of other channels.
