Ten Leiden students receive prize for outstanding achievement

Ten Leiden students have received a prize from the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities (KHMW). They were nominated by their degree programme. Who are these students?

The Leiden laureates all study at the Faculty of Science. The prizes were awarded in the KHMW’s historical building, Hodshon Huis in Haarlem. Nine first-year students received an incentive prize and one master’s student was awarded the KHMW Graduation Award. The winners were nominated by the Faculty Board and Board of Examiners.

Marouscha Puister

Thesis on fighting cancer

Chemistry student Marouscha Puister was awarded the Chemistry Graduation Prize for her thesis on the use of venom and light to treat cancer. She researched how substances from bee venom can be used in combination with photoresponsive metals to treat cancer. In an interview on the KHMW website she said, ‘I think it’s fascinating that something intangible like light can activate a chemical reaction, and I hope that my research will contribute to better, more targeted therapies.’ Puister is working with a research team on a scientific publication and a patent application has been filed for the metal used. The prize is 3,000 euros.

Aanmoedigingsprijs

The Leiden winners of the KHMW Young Talent Incentive Awards are the first-year students with the best grades. They each receive 500 euros. Congratulations and the best of luck with your studies!
