Ákos Kovács appointed Director of Education at the Institute of Biology Leiden
Ákos Kovács has been appointed as Director of Education at the Institute of Biology Leiden (IBL). He succeeds Dennis Claessen. Kovács has been appointed with effect from 1 September for a term of 4 years.
Kovács brings valuable experience from various governance roles at different institutions. In addition, his experience as a member of the Board of Examiners has provided him with a broad understanding of the full scope and quality of the education offered by the IBL.
A board member with valuable experience
Institute Board members Dennis Claessen and Maribel Adame Valero are delighted that Ákos will be taking on the role of Director of Education: ‘With his extensive administrative experience, he will make a significant contribution to the transition to the new board composition.’ Vice-Dean Bart de Smit is also pleased with the appointment: ‘Ákos can, with his vision for education and his strong leadership qualities, contribute to the integrated management of education, research and operations within the IBL.’
Working towards shared objectives
Kovács is looking forward to contributing to the further development of the IBL’s educational activities in this leadership role. ‘I am honoured to be taking up the post of Director of Education. As a member of the institute’s board, I am keen to work alongside Dennis and Maribel towards our shared objectives, and I also see this as a wonderful opportunity to further expand my network within the faculty.’
How the Faculty of Science organises its governance model
Since 1 July 2024, the Faculty has been working with collegial institute boards, introducing a new, contemporary approach to governance. An institute board consists of three directors who are jointly responsible for the institute. Each director has their own portfolio: a Scientific Director, a Director of Education and a Director of Operations.
