Ae Ree Nam wins the 2026 Faculty Teaching Award
Lecturer Ae Ree Nam has won the 2026 Faculty Teaching Award. The jury praised the way in which she manages to engage all her students in her lectures.
Alongside Nam, Hossam Ahmed and Tom-Eric Krijger were nominated this year. In his speech, Carlos Stratov, Vice-Chair of the Faculty Teaching Committee, praised Ahmed for the positive atmosphere he managed to create in his lectures, partly thanks to his sense of humour. Krijger stood out for his impressive collection of Goose Board games, which he used to demonstrate the impact of religion on everyday life. The committee was also impressed by the way he incorporated his students’ diverse backgrounds into the lecture.
Although the committee did not understand ‘a word’ of Ae Ree Nam’s Korean lecture, she is this year’s winner of the prize. ‘On the dreary and depressing Monday morning of our visit, she had managed to ensure that all the first-year students had completed the extensive preparatory work and were present and enthusiastic,’ said Stratov, who went on to praise the way in which Nam had also encouraged the quieter students in the classroom to speak up.
About the award
To recognise high-quality teaching and highlight the important role of the lecturer, the Faculty of Humanities Teaching Award is presented annually. All teaching staff at the faculty can be nominated by student societies, the student members of programme committees or by a group of at least three students. The jury, comprising the Teaching Committee, assesses the nominated lecturers on the basis of the quality of their lectures, supervision and teaching materials. The prize comes with a cash award of €1,000.
