Throwback to the Faculty Opening of the Academic Year
Welcome back at the Faculty of Archaeology! We hope you had a nice summer. On Tuesday September 1 the Faculty festively opened the academic year of 2026-2027.
Standing among staff and students, Dean of the Faculty of Archaeology Alex Geurds addressed the crowd and offered a glimpse of the academic year ahead. He highlighted several key developments and events, including the formulation of a new Faculty research profile and the European Association of Archaeologists' Annual Meeting, which will take place in Leiden from 25 to 28 August 2027.
The occasion also provided an opportunity to celebrate the Faculty's teaching excellence. Rachel Schats was congratulated on receiving the LUS Teaching Prize during the University's Opening of the Academic Year the day before, while Martin Berger was recognised as one of the prize's runners-up. With two finalists this year, following Arjan Louwen's win in 2026, the Faculty of Archaeology once again demonstrated the high value it places on outstanding teaching.
Reconnecting
Following Alex's brief address, staff and students had the opportunity to mingle and catch up. For many, it was the first chance to reconnect after the summer break and fieldwork season. Non-alcoholic champagne and a selection of sweets added to the festive atmosphere and helped make the start of the academic year a celebratory occasion.
