Hans van de Waal
This lecture is dedicated to art historian Hans van de Waal (1910-1972).
Henri, known to everyone as Hans, studied art history at Leiden University and, after graduating, worked at the university's Prentenkabinet.
During World War II, Van de Waal was first imprisoned in Camp Barneveld and then in Camp Westerbork. After the war, he resumed his work at Leiden University. In 1946, he was appointed professor and director of the university's Prentenkabinet.
Hans van de Waal died in 1972 at the age of 62, partly due to the consequences of his time in Camp Westerbork.
