Uhlenbeck conference scholarship

The Uhlenbeck conference scholarship has been set up especially for research master students at the Faculty of Humanities.

Conditions

1. You are majoring in one of the following research master degree programmes at the Faculty of Humanities:

  • African Studies (research)
  • Arts and Culture (research)
  • Asian Studies (research)
  • Classics and Ancient Civilisations (research)
  • History (research)
  • Latin American Studies (research)
  • Linguistics (research)
  • Literary Studies (research)
  • Middle Eastern Studies (research)

2. You will actively participate in a conference.

3. You have not received a grant from the Uhlenbeck scholarship programme for the purpose of conference participation during your current degree programme.

4. You have read the health and safety guidelines carefully before going abroad. In addition, please attend the health & safety meeting. More information on the meeting.

5. The country or region of your internship has not been assigned one of the following classifications by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs: ‘We advise essential travel only’ or ‘We advise against all travel’. More information here: https://www.nederlandwereldwijd.nl/reisadvies

6. You have to submit your application before you go abroad. If you cannot make this deadline, please contact the Humanities International Office through studyabroad@hum.leidenuniv.nl

Application

You can apply for the scholarship digitally once your study abroad activity has been registered in our mobility database:

  1. Go to uSis (desktop version) and click on the Study Abroad tile
  2. Click on “New” and select the group that mentions “Conference”
  3. Follow the instructions for "Conference" to submit your registration
  4. When your registration has been ‘approved’, the Scholarship tab will appear in the same portal
  5. Select the Uhlenbeck conference scholarship
  6. Follow the instructions to submit your scholarship application
  7. You need to upload the following documents:
    1. A short reference letter from a Leiden University staff member supporting your participation
    2. Evidence of your participation in the conference (e.g. conference programme with your name or an email from the organization.)
    3. Budget with estimated costs for: travel / accommodation / conferences fees (when applicable) / conference dinner costs (when applicable)

You are allowed and encouraged to combine this grant with the Leiden University Fonds (LUF / LIFS) grant or other scholarships.

Maximum grant amounts

In the Netherlands: € 250,-
In a member country of the EU: € 500,-
Outside the EU: € 750,-

The Humanities Internal Office decides the total grant based on your budget.

Important to know

Leiden University’s Financial Shared Service Centre will transfer the scholarship within 4 working weeks. Please be aware that (national) holidays can influence the duration of this process.
