Uhlenbeck scholarship programme for mandatory study abroad

The Uhlenbeck scholarship programme has been set up especially for (research) master students at the Faculty of Humanities. The programme provides a scholarship for your mandatory activities abroad.

The programme’s focus consists of study exchanges, field work or research outside of the Netherlands. Are you leaving for an internship? Check whether you might be eligible for a scholarship from the Sustainable Humanities Internship Fund.

Conditions

1. You are majoring in one of the following (research) master degree programmes at the Faculty of Humanities and studying abroad is a mandatory part of your study programme.  

  • African Studies 
  • Classics and Ancient Civilisations 
  • Latin American Studies 

2. You have been selected and have met the requirements to go abroad.  

3. You have not received a study/fieldwork grant from the Uhlenbeck scholarship programme during your current degree programme.

4. You have read the health and safety guidelines carefully before going abroad

5. The country or region that you want to visit is safe and has not been assigned one of the following classifications by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs: ‘We advise essential travel only’ or ‘We advise against all travel’.

6. Your grant application is on time. The final deadline for submission of the form is 10 working days before the start of your stay abroad. If you cannot make this deadline, please contact Rob van Leeuwen through studyabroad@hum.leidenuniv.nl

Application

1. Prepare the following forms:

a. Application form (as a PDF file)
b. Payment request form (as a Word file)

Additional application document(s): When applicable: approval from your thesis / field work supervisor (as a PDF file).

2. Send these documents in ONE email to scholarships@hum.leidenuniv.nl.

3. Register your study abroad period in Usis (via the Study abroad! tile). After clicking on this tile, please select mandatory study abroad (behind the third bullet) and follow the next steps.

Important to know

You are allowed and encouraged to combine the Uhlenbeck grant with Lustra+ or other scholarships. Please see the scholarship webpage. Be sure to check the application deadlines!

Leiden University’s Financial Shared Service Centre will transfer the scholarship within 4 working weeks. Please be aware that (national) holidays can influence the duration of this process.

Professor E.M. Uhlenbeck

The scholarship programme has been named after Professor Bob Uhlenbeck, who was himself an example of a travel enthusiast and international oriented humanities scholar. After the Second World War Professor E.M. Uhlenbeck (1913-2003) started lecturing general and Indonesian linguistics at the University of Indonesia, after which he became Professor of Javanese in Leiden from 1949 to 1983. In 1953 he was visiting professor at the Linguistic Institute in Bloomington, Indiana, and in 1965 at the University of California at San Diego. From 1965 to 1966, Uhlenbeck was fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences in Stanford, California and in 1973 professorial fellow at The Australian National University in Canberra.
