Uhlenbeck scholarship programme

The Uhlenbeck scholarship programme has been set up especially for research master students at the Faculty of Humanities. The programme provides a (supplementary) scholarship for your stay abroad.

The programme’s focus consists of study exchanges, field work or research outside of the Netherlands. Are you leaving for an internship? Check whether you might be eligible for a scholarship from the Sustainable Humanities Internship Fund.

Conditions

1. You are majoring in one of the following (research) master degree programmes at the Faculty of Humanities:

  • African Studies (research)
  • Arts and Culture (research)
  • Asian Studies (research)
  • Classics and Ancient Civilizations (research)
  • History (research)
  • Latin American Studies (research)
  • Linguistics (research)
  • Literary Studies (research)
  • Middle Eastern Studies (research)
  • MA African Studies, provided your stay abroad is in the framework of the MA programme component “Field Assignment African Studies”
  • MA Classics and Ancient Civilisations, specialization Egyptology, provided your stay abroad is in the framework of the MA programme component “Egyptology in the Field: Research and Facilities in Egypt”
  • MA History, The Europaeum programme: European History and Civilization, provided that your stay abroad is in the framework of the Oxford programme
  • MA Latin American Studies, provided your stay abroad is in the framework of the MA programme component “Research in Latin America”

2. You will carry out one of the following activities:

  • Do research/field work leading up to credits
  • Studying at a host university as a free mover
  • Combine research/field work with studying at a host university as a free mover

​​​​​​​Please be aware that the following activities will not be supported by an Uhlenbeck scholarship:

  • research in the framework of your thesis
  • study at a host university as an exchange student

3. You have not received a study/fieldwork grant from the Uhlenbeck scholarship programme during your current degree programme.

4. You have supplied the Humanities International Office with your travel information through our online form.

5. You have read the health and safety guidelines carefully before going abroad

6. The country or region that you want to visit is safe and has not been assigned one of the following classifications by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs: ‘We advise essential travel only’ or ‘We advise against all travel’.

7. Your grant application is on time. The final deadline for submission of the form is 10 working days before the start of your stay abroad. If you cannot make this deadline, please contact Karin Aalderink through studyabroad@hum.leidenuniv.nl

1. Fill in your travel & emergency contact information through our online form. We do not take your application in consideration without these details.

2. Prepare the following forms:

a. Application form (as a PDF file)
b. Payment request form (as a Word file)

Additional application document(s):

a. Approval from your Board of Examiners including both an outline of your plan or courses and the amount of EC (as a PDF file) or approval from your thesis / field work supervisor (as a PDF file).  
b. Only for free movers: a letter of acceptance from the host university (as a PDF file)

3. Send these documents in ONE email to scholarships@hum.leidenuniv.nl.

Important to know

You are allowed and encouraged to combine the Uhlenbeck grant with Lustra+ or other scholarships. Please see the scholarship webpage. Be sure to check the application deadlines!

Leiden University’s Financial Shared Service Centre will transfer the scholarship within 4 working weeks. Please be aware that (national) holidays can influence the duration of this process.

The Uhlenbeck scholarship programme is limited. The grants are processed on a first come first served basis (starting from January every year). We will communicate on this website when we expect that grants cannot be applied for anymore.

Professor E.M. Uhlenbeck

The scholarship programme has been named after Professor Bob Uhlenbeck, who was himself an example of a travel enthusiast and international oriented humanities scholar. After the Second World War Professor E.M. Uhlenbeck (1913-2003) started lecturing general and Indonesian linguistics at the University of Indonesia, after which he became Professor of Javanese in Leiden from 1949 to 1983. In 1953 he was visiting professor at the Linguistic Institute in Bloomington, Indiana, and in 1965 at the University of California at San Diego. From 1965 to 1966, Uhlenbeck was fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences in Stanford, California and in 1973 professorial fellow at The Australian National University in Canberra.
