Uhlenbeck scholarship research master students
The Uhlenbeck scholarship research master students has been set up especially for research master students at the Faculty of Humanities. The programme provides a (supplementary) scholarship for your stay abroad.

The programme’s focus consists of study, field work or research outside of the Netherlands. Are you leaving for an internship? Check whether you might be eligible for a scholarship from the Sustainable Humanities Internship Fund.
Conditions
1. You are majoring in one of the following research master degree programmes at the Faculty of Humanities: Arts and Culture, Asian Studies, History, Linguistics, Literary Studies, and Middle Eastern Studies.
If you are a student of the African Studies, Latin American Studies or Classics and Ancient Civilizations you should apply for the Uhlenbeck Scholarship programme for mandatory study abroad.
2. You will carry out one of the following activities:
- Do research/field work leading up to credits
- Studying at a host university as a free mover
- Combine research/field work with studying at a host university as a free mover
Please be aware that the following activities will not be supported by an Uhlenbeck scholarship: research in the framework of your thesis and study at a host university as an exchange student.
3. You have not received a study/fieldwork grant from the Uhlenbeck scholarship programme during your current degree programme.
4. You have read the health and safety guidelines carefully before going abroad
5. The country or region that you want to visit is safe. Please refer to the terms & conditions for more information.

Instructions on how to apply
You can apply for the scholarship digitally once your study abroad activity has been registered in our mobility database:
Will you be doing fieldwork or research?
- Go to uSis (desktop version) and click on the Study Abroad tile;
- Click on “New” and select the group that mentions “Fieldwork”;
- Follow the instructions for “Fieldwork” to submit your registration;
- When your registration has been ‘approved’, the Scholarship tab will appear in the same portal;
- Select the relevant scholarship;
- Follow the instructions to submit your scholarship application;
- Please be aware that you need to upload the approval from your Board of Examiners including both an outline of your plan and the amount of EC;
Will you become a free mover?
- Go to uSis (desktop version) and click on the Study Abroad tile;
- Click on “New” and select the group that mentions “Free mover”;
- Follow the instructions for “Freemover” to submit your registration;
- You need to upload evidence that your Board of Examiners has approved your study plan or the courses you are intending to take at the host university. The amount of credits should lead up to the equivalent of 20 EC or more;
- When your registration has been ‘approved’, the Scholarship tab will appear in the same portal;
- Select the relevant scholarship;
- Follow the instructions to submit your scholarship application;
In this step you need to upload evidence that you have been accepted by the host university as a free mover or visiting student (e.g. a letter of acceptance).
Important to know
You are allowed and encouraged to combine the Uhlenbeck grant with Lustra+ or other scholarships. Please see the scholarship webpage. Be sure to check the application deadlines!
Leiden University’s Financial Shared Service Centre will transfer the scholarship within 4 working weeks. Please be aware that (national) holidays can influence the duration of this process.
The Uhlenbeck scholarship programme is limited. The grants are processed on a first come first served basis (starting from January every year). We will communicate on this website when we expect that grants cannot be applied for anymore.
You have to submit your application before you go abroad. If you cannot make this deadline, please contact the Humanities International Office through studyabroad@hum.leidenuniv.nl

Professor E.M. Uhlenbeck
The scholarship programme has been named after Professor Bob Uhlenbeck, who was himself an example of a travel enthusiast and international oriented humanities scholar. After the Second World War Professor E.M. Uhlenbeck (1913-2003) started lecturing general and Indonesian linguistics at the University of Indonesia, after which he became Professor of Javanese in Leiden from 1949 to 1983. In 1953 he was visiting professor at the Linguistic Institute in Bloomington, Indiana, and in 1965 at the University of California at San Diego. From 1965 to 1966, Uhlenbeck was fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences in Stanford, California and in 1973 professorial fellow at The Australian National University in Canberra.
