Pregnancy

Are you studying whilst pregnant? Find out about the support available at Leiden University and any other matters you should take into consideration.

Talk to your study adviser

Make an appointment with your study adviser as early as possible. Together you can decide whether you should draw up an adapted study plan and if you might be eligible for financial support.

Financial support

From the university

If you fall behind in your studies as a result of being pregnant, you may be eligible for financial support from the university (Regulations on financial support for students). Certain conditions do apply.

You may be entitled to financial compensation, from four to six weeks before the birth until ten to twelve weeks after. This period can be extended if you experience complications. Financial support of this nature is only intended for mothers (to be), not partners.

Application
Do you meet all conditions? If so, make an appointment with your study adviser to submit an application, no more than 30 days after your studies start being negatively affected.

More information
Read more about the Regulations on financial support. If you have any questions, please contact student counsellor Clair Francis.

From DUO

If you do not have a partner you may, in some circumstances, be eligible for single parent subsidy from DUO (info in Dutch).

Housing

Bear in mind that you may have to find different accommodation. DUWO, for example, will not permit you to stay in their accommodation with a child. Check the rental conditions with your landlord and, if necessary, start looking for alternative accommodation as soon as you can.

Childcare

In Leiden, the university has its own childcare centre especially for the children of students and staff: Daycare Centre De Kattekop
