Barrier-Free Studying project
Leiden University and a number of other institutions have signed a statement of intent concerning the improvement of inclusivity and accessibility in education. This statement of intent was prompted by the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with a Disability and has led to the launch of the Barrier-Free Studying project. At the heart of the project are three main goals, namely inclusivity in education and policies, knowledge accumulation and student participation.
The project comprises four thematic expert groups:
- Physical accessibility
- Digital accessibility
- Exam provisions
- Expertise building
These expert groups are made up of both students and staff. Themes such as promoting awareness and defining needs are being addressed, as well as more concrete matters such as setting up guidance groups for students with AD(H)D, subtitling film materials and the importance of personal contact in thesis supervision.
