Honours Classes

Honours Classes are small-scale, interdisciplinary courses that address complex scientific and social issues. Are you looking for extra challenge alongside your Bachelor studies? If so, why not register for an Honours Class?

Interdisciplinary and international

During Honours Classes you will work together with students from other faculties and other universities. Honours Classes are also popular with international students. Due to the interdisciplinary and international nature of these classes, you’ll learn to tackle issues from different disciplinary and cultural perspectives.

For everyone

Students following the Honours College programme are required to select at least one Honours Class as part of their Honours track. However Bachelor students who are not following the Honours College Programme are also welcome to register for Honours Classes. All you need is sufficient time and motivation to follow an Honours Class on top of your regular studies.

TU Delft and Erasmus University Rotterdam

Students of TU Delft and the Erasmus University Rotterdam can also follow Honours Classes at Leiden University. You don’t need to be an Honours College student at your own university to do so.

Wide range of classes

You can choose from a selection of around 40 different Honours Classes. The selection changes each year due to the up-to-date and topical nature of the issues covered.

When

You can follow Honours Classes either in the first semester, second semester or during the summer. Honours College students can decide at what point in their Honours track they want to follow an Honours Class. In general, the best time to follow an Honours class is during the third year of your Bachelor programme.

Study credits and certificates

Honours Classes are worth 5ECs. These are extra-curricular study credits, not elective credits. In other words, they cannot be counted towards the credit requirement for your degree programme.*
Successfully completed Honours Classes will be mentioned on your diploma supplement and you will also receive an Honour Class certificate. (Honours College students will not receive a separate Honours Class certificate. Instead they will receive a certificate upon completion of their entire Honours College track.)

* Exception: if you are an LUC student, you can request that the ECs for one Honours Class be counted towards the credit requirement for your Bachelor programme. However you must first request permission from the LUC Board of Examiners.
