Board of Examiners
The role of the Board of Examiners is to ensure that study programmes adhere to their Course and Examination Regulations. The Board of Examiners oversees all tests and examinations within the institute and determines whether students have acquired the knowledge and skills required for the awarding of their degree.
Each institute has a Board of Examiners, the members of which are appointed by the Faculty Board. The Board of Examiners is responsible for the effective organisation and quality assurance of all tests and examinations within the institute. If you would like to request a change to your academic requirements, for example an exemption or extension, it is the Board of Examiners who will make the final decision on your request.
Board of Examiners Faculty of Medicine
The Faculty of Medicine consists of five Boards of Examiners, each with its own chairperson. The Board is responsible for monitoring compliance with the Course & Examination Regulations (OER) and is legally appointed to monitor the organisation of examinations (WHW Art 7.12).
Activities of the Board of Examiners are:
- monitoring the quality and level of examinations and individual tests;
- assessing and assigning individual exemptions, elective courses, (applications for internship) and other requests;
- handling complaints about exams;
- dealing and taking measures related to irregularities during examinations and alleged cases of plagiarism and fraud;
- issuing the binding study advice on behalf of the Executive Board of the LUMC;
- appointing of Examiners.

Requests or objections are submitted by e-mail (recommended, see contact), or alternatively by post. Requests must be submitted through uMail of University Leiden or LUMC e-mail account. Check that the request is complete.
A request must be accompanied by documented evidence: a specifically formulated letter, including full name, student number and (if applicable) the course and course code. Any required supporting documents (grade lists, course description) may be sent as a PDF. Requests or e-mails sent to personal e-mail accounts, incomplete or anonymous letters, or documents via OneDrive or WeTransfer will not be processed. The study advisor of the relevant degree program may help with questions regarding requests to the Board of Examiners.
The Board of Examiners will handle requests within 30 working days (6 weeks) of receipt. Submit a request well before deadlines and take public holidays and recesses into account. After reaching a decision, the Board will send the decision to your uMail account. Questions concerning the decision may be send to the e-mail address of the Board of Examiners.
Students can launch an appeal within six weeks of receiving the decision of the Board of Examiners. More information is available on the website of the Examination Appeals Boards and on this page.
