Honours education

As an honours student you will become part of the Leiden Honours Community – a network of students who want to get more out of their studies.

Leiden University’s Honours Academy is responsible for the organisation of these programmes. It is housed in the beautiful Old Observatory building.

Personalised and challenging

With the Honours Academy you can follow small-scale inspiring education programmes. These teach you high level problem-based thinking from both a mono- and multi-disciplinary perspective. You will be granted the freedom to develop your own skills whilst having the opportunity to get involved in academic research. The following study programmes are offered by Leiden University:

  • Pre-University College: two-year programme for vwo students (Dutch pre-university secondary school)
  • PRE-classes: academic electives for vwo students
  • Honours College: extra education and research (30 EC) for Bachelor’s students
  • Honours Classes (Bachelor): elective honours courses
  • Leiden Leadership Programme: one-year programme for Master’s students who want to learn more about leadership
  • International Leiden Leadership Programme: for Master’s students, English-taught

Honours Community

Students who take part in the Honours Academy’s programmes tend to have a lot in common. They are:

  • inquisitive,
  • highly-motivated and
  • ambitious.

As an honours student you will become part of the Leiden Honours Community – a network of students who want to get more out of their studies. The community enables you to get to know students and lecturers from outside your study programme and, in doing so, build and extend your (professional) network.
You can decide for yourself what you want to do within the Honours Community. As an honours student you can also take part in activities outside the university, for example the G200 and the National Think-Tank.

The Honours Academy  – the university body responsible for  honours programmes – organises (faculty) activities several times a year for its students. These could be readings, such as those on the subject of ‘Identity’ which recently took place, or even honours concerts and summer parties intended to bring the academic year to a festive close. See the Honours Academy website for upcoming events.

SLHC study association

There is a study association specifically for students on the honours programme: SLHC (website in Dutch). SLHC organises activities that help honours students get to know each other (better), for example annual overseas trips and job market events.

Themis study association

The HC Law now has its own study association, Themis Juridical Honours Association, which organises activities for law students following the HC Law track. Find out more by visiting their Facebook page
