Summer and winter schools

Summer and winter schools are short programmes that you can follow during the holidays, which means your studies won’t be effected. Some summer and winter schools award credits, others don’t. In general, you will have to pay a fee.

Where?

Summer and winter schools are offered all over the world.

Please note: Inclusion in this overview does not mean that Leiden University recommends a programme or will recognise credits earned during that programme. If you would like the credits you earn during a summer/winter school to count towards your studies, you must request advance permission from your study programme.

There are many universities offering short programmes. If you are unable to find a suitable summer/winter school in the overview, search for information on university websites

Negative travel advice? Check your destination

You may not go on exchange in a country for which negative travel advice has been issued. Check here if your destination is safe. This webpage is in Dutch, but by entering the country name (Dutch spelling) you can view the safety status on a map. If your destination is red or orange, you may not go there.

Permission from your study programme

Would you like the credits you earn during a summer or winter school to be counted towards your studies in Leiden? If so, you must request advance permission from your programme and make sure your credits are recognised upon your return. Ask your faculty or programme’s international exchange coordinator how to go about this.

Application

Application procedures vary greatly. Check the information provided by the host institution.

Information on Summer Schools, specifically for students at the Faculty of Science can be found in the  blackboard course ‘Study & Internship Abroad - Faculty of Science’.

Go to the Leiden University tab for an overview of available Summer & Winter schools. These programmes usually don't result in any EC's for your Astronomy master's programme. However, they do result in highly valuable experiences, both professional and personal.
