After your studies
If you graduate or stop studying for other reasons, this will have consequences for your finances. Check which steps you need to take and what to take into account.
1. Cancel your student registration
If you graduate or stop studying before the end of the academic year, you must cancel your student registration yourself. Do this as quickly as possible to avoid paying tuition fees for longer than necessary.
Tuition fee: refund or pay extra
Once you request de-registration, the university will recalculate your tuition fee based on the number of months you were registered. This might mean you still have to pay an amount or that you are entitled to a partial refund. This amount will be automatically debited from, or credited to, your bank account.
Check here the conditions for tuition fee refunds.
2. Cancel your Dutch student finance
Are you claiming Dutch student finance? Make sure to cancel it as soon as you finish studying. That way you can avoid having to repay money or incurring fines. See Stopping your student finance.
Travel with discount for a year
After cancelling your Dutch student travel product you can get a free subscription for discounted travel with the NS.
3. Cancel or update your benefits
If your income or living situation will change once you finish studying, this can affect your healthcare or rent benefit. Communicate any changes as soon as possible. That way you can avoid having to repay any benefits.
4. Check your health insurance, bank account and subscriptions
Do you have health insurance, a Dutch bank account or any subscriptions? Check the conditions and if necessary, change or cancel them on time.
5. Leaving the Netherlands or staying to work?
Leaving the Netherlands
As an international student, make sure to follow all the steps on the Leaving the Netherlands page to avoid, for example, incurring unnecessary bank costs or having to repay benefits.
Staying to work
Would you like to stay in the Netherlands to work and earn a little money? Find out more on the Study in NL - Working after your studies website. If you are a residence permit holder, make sure to first check the regulations on extending your stay.
Other important steps
As well as financial matters there are other important next steps you might need to take when de-registering as a student.
