Tips from international students

Check all possible sources of income
Take a look at the tips under Student finance, benefits and scholarships and part-time job or internship to make sure you aren't missing out on any income. Maybe you are entitled certain benefits or are eligible for a tax rebate? A quick check might lead to extra income.
Insight into your finances
An overview of your income and expenditure can help you identify areas in which you might be able to save money. Take a look at the tools and tips to help you get a clear insight into your finances.
Avoid buying on credit
It might seem convenient but can quickly lead to financial problems. And only buy what you really need.
Housing
Are you renting independent accommodation? You might be eligible for rent benefit.

Insurances
Some insurance companies offer affordable student insurance policies. If you are working or doing a paid internship and need Dutch public health insurance, there are also sometimes discounts for students. Learn more on the insurance page for new international students.
Sports
As a student, you can get affordable sports club membership at the University Sports Centre (USC) in Leiden and The Hague.
Creative courses
At the LAK , you can get student discount on creative courses and workshops such as theatre, dance, drawing, painting, singing, photography and literature.
Discount at shops, cafes and cultural locations
Many organisations offer student discount. Always check if there are discounts for students when you go shopping or visit museums or events.
You can also get discounts via:
- Leiden University Fund (LUF): as a Student Member of LUF you can get discount at participating cafes and restaurants in Leiden and The Hague.
- CJP: for discount on music, film, cultural events and more (in Dutch - see translation instructions)
- Knaek: for student discounts in your city.
Repair Cafés
Is your bicycle, laptop or other device or equipment broken? At a Repair Café you can get it fixed for free or a very cheap price. Find a Repair Café near you.
