Part-time job or internship

A part-time job can help to boost your income during your studies. If you do an internship, this can also have financial consequences. Find out more.

Are you a student residence permit holder?

There are additional regulations in place. Before looking for a part-time job or internship, read the information on working and internships for residence permit holders

Finding a part-time job or internship
  • Register with Jobmotion for a part-time job at Leiden University, for example as student assistant or exam invigilator.
  • Take a look in the LU Career Zone for more vacancies and information about part-time jobs. 

Extra considerations international students

Be aware that if you work or (in some cases) do a paid internship during your studies, you must take out Dutch public health insurance. See the insurance page for new international students for details.

If you are working alongside your studies, you are entitled to at least Dutch minimum wage. 

Internship finances

There are no rules concerning salaries for interns in the Netherlands. This is between you and your internship provider. In some cases you might receive payment, in other cases not.

Note that doing a paid internship may affect your tax and social security status. You may also have less time for a part-time job which could impact your finances.

Tax rebate

Have you worked or done a paid internship? It's possible that too much tax was withheld from your salary. If you submit a tax return, you may be eligible for a tax rebate.
