Brightspace will be the digital learning environment of Leiden University as of the 2020/2021 academic year.
Until September 2020 Blackboard is the digital learning environment for lecturers and students. A part of the University started working with Brightspace in September 2019. All faculties participated in a first phase where students and lecturers could experience working with Brightspace.
The students and lecturers who started their courses in Brightspace in 2019, gave their feedback in surveys. You can read more in the news article below on the evaluations or read 3 student feedback responses and the answers here:
Good question. Leiden University started working with Blackboard in 1998. Since then a lot of experience has been built up with a system that met the demand of the University of that time.
For more Dutch Universities than Leiden alone, the need arose after 15 years for a new tender for the delivery of a digital learning environment. On the basis of a set of requirements and in consultation with all users, four providers were considered. After the preliminary choice for Brightspace, it was tested whether the system was compatible with the important functionalities and links. Subsequently, the choice was made final.
Brightspace can be consulted on your mobile, even without the app. Brightspace is responsive making it easily accessible on any device via the browser.
Thank you so much! Feedback that both students and lecturers share is that Brightspace works intuitively. It looks pleasant and it works logically. Have you already looked? You can log in with your ULCN account.
The experiences of students and teachers have been incorporated into recommendations for the further roll-out of Brightspace. All subjects in Blackboard are now being converted and that's quite a job. So if you come across any opportunities for improvement, please let us know. The more feedback, the better Brightspace can be tailored to the needs of Leiden users.
