Do you have good reasons for preferring to compile a personal programme rather than following the Humanities faculty track? If so, you can pursue your specific academic passions by applying to do an individual humanities-based programme.
Although an individual track may look very appealing, experience shows that it can be demanding and difficult to complete. You will have to deal with practical obstacles such as scheduling conflicts, course prerequisites, un-available courses or non-admission to courses. You will be responsible for organising your own programme, i.e. searching for courses, drawing up your timetable, registering for courses and contacting lecturers to arrange participation. To avoid disappointment we recommend that you carefully consider your plan and be aware that a great deal of flexibility is required. You must be prepared to make frequent adaptations and invest a lot of time in organising practical matters.
Individual track criteria
You must include the following two required courses worth 5 EC each:
To fill the remaining 20 EC you can use the following options:
- You can take regular bachelor’s courses, but must earn a minimum weighted average grade of 8.0 and at least 7.0 for each individual course for these to be recognised as Honours level.
- You can pursue a research internship from 10 EC (minimum) to 15 EC (maximum).
- You may include a maximum of 10 EC of master’s-level courses. Note that additional requirements may apply and these courses will not count towards a future master’s programme.
- You can take Honours-designated courses, i.e. Honours Classes, Leiden University College courses (max. 5 EC), courses offered by the Humanities Lab or courses offered by Honours tracks of other faculties.
Additional criteria:
- Your individual track needs to be worthy of the Honours certificate, therefore courses should be at level 300 or 400, with a maximum of one course at level 200.
- Overall coherence is a very important consideration when designing your individual track programme.
- You may include a course at another faculty, or even another university, as long as it is consistent with your overarching theme and your programme remains humanities based.
Admission requirements
- You must obtain your propaedeutic (first-year) diploma within one year (admission in the first enrollment phase in January BA1 is provisional);
- You have the self-discipline and time to follow an extra programme;
- You have a specific academic passion that can be translated into a coherent, solid, individual programme;
- You receive a positive first study advice in January;
- You achieve good grades: we do not use fixed grade criteria, but experience shows that students with an average grade of 7.3 or higher are able to do an honours programme in addition to their regular Bachelor’s programme.

Applications for the individual track of FSW (2021-2022) have closed. It is still possible to apply for the faculty track. In this track, there is a lot of flexibility to put together the programme in a way that satisfies your personal interests and goals.
After application
Once you have submitted your application, the admission committee will decide whether you can be admitted.
If you have applied to begin in the second semester of your first academic year, you can be 'provisionally' admitted and permitted to start your honours studies. If you fulfil the admission condition of obtaining your propaedeutic (first-year) diploma within one year and the other conditions, your admission will be made 'definitive' in October.
If you have applied to begin in your second academic year, you will be informed whether you have been admitted in October, after we have verified that you have obtained your propaedeutic diploma on time.
Please note: music tracks no longer available
Up and to the academic year 2022-2023, the Honours College offered two music tracks as individual tracks: Practicum Musicae Honours and Honours College Music. These tracks are no longer available in 2023-2024. Practicum Musicae as such will still be available. If you have any questions about this, please send an e-mail to honourscollege@ha.leidenuniv.nl.
