Master Honours Classes

Master Honours Classes are small-scale, extracurricular, interdisciplinary courses that address both theory and practice. Are you looking for additional challenge alongside your master's programme? Why not register for an Honours Class?

Small-scale and interdisciplinary

Master Honours Classes are small-scale, which means there’s plenty of room for personal focus and debate. Classes address complex scientific and social issues that demand an interdisciplinary approach. You will study alongside students from various study programmes.

In a Master Honours Class you will:

  • Tackle issues from different perspectives
  • Gain experience working with people outside your field of study

Theory and practice

During the Master Honours Classes, you will be challenged by innovative forms of education. Not only will you delve into theory, but you will also tackle a social case study. After attending a lecture, you might find yourself dealing with a practical problem or even undertaking a project for an external partner. Through this real-life approach you will learn to apply scientific theory to practice.

Who can apply?

To attend a Master Honours Class you must meet the following admission requirements:

  • You are following a master’s programme at Leiden University
  • Your average grade for your bachelor’s programme is 7 or higher
  • You are a highly motivated student

Please note: You need to be enrolled in a master’s programme at Leiden University for the entire duration of the Master Honours Class. Students who will graduate in the meantime are not eligible to apply.

Study credits and certification

Master Honours Classes are worth 5 or 10 EC. Upon successful completion, you will receive an Honours Class certificate and have your Honours Class mentioned on your diploma supplement as an extra-curricular course.
