Selection criteria and application procedure

Track 1

Track 1 is only open to master's students following a master's programme at the Faculty of Law of Leiden University. Students can express their interest to the master coordinator of their master's programme. The master coordinator may decide to nominate the student for the PPP.

Track 1 has a maximum number of participants. When admitting candidates, the Graduate School takes into account the following criteria as evidenced by the documents submitted:

- Indication that the candidate has an interest in and talent for conducting research (evidenced by additional courses taken and/or research-related activities in the attached CV and marksheets);

- Motivation for doing research evidenced by a cover letter;

- A statement from a staff member with a PhD from the Faculty of Law willing to supervise the candidate during the research traineeship between April and July of the academic year;

- A declaration from the master coordinator that the candidate can follow the compulsory research meetings and two of the four courses in addition to the master's programme.

Track 2

Track 2 is open to employees of the Faculty of Law with the ambition of obtaining a PhD. Track 2 offers the opportunity to already take some courses from the PhD programme.

Track 2 has a maximum number of candidates. Candidates for Track 2 can apply directly to Graduate School. The Graduate School takes the following criteria into account when admitting candidates as evidenced by the documents submitted:

For new candidates

- Indication that the candidate has an interest in and talent for conducting research (evidenced by research-related activities in the attached CV);

- Motivation for research demonstrated by a cover letter.

Candidates in possession of a (final) certificate from Track 1 (or an (older) Phase 1 certificate):

- No additional requirements. Candidates in possession of a Track 1 (formely Phase 1) certificate are required to send it together with their application.

Admission and conditions

A final selection will be made by the Graduate School. Candidates must declare their ability to follow the established programme prior to admission. The possibility to follow (certain) courses from the PhD programme may be limited for candidates for Track 2 in view of the available (room) capacity.
