Programme information

African Studies is an interdisciplinary field of study that straddles the (artificial) divide between the humanities and the social sciences, and students following this programme will develop knowledge and skills that cross the traditional disciplinary boundaries.

The research master's in African Studies is a broad and multifaceted programme in which an interdisciplinary approach is combined with in-depth study of a particular theme and region. Students are encouraged to continue to develop their competence in their own specific discipline but at the same time have to acquire sufficient knowledge of a wide variety of disciplines and how they pertain to Africa. They will be able to evaluate and, where appropriate, incorporate the results of such disciplines in their own work.

The aim of the International Research Master in African Studies is to produce scholars capable of independently judging and initiating research into the history, political economy and culture of African countries. The curriculum develops research skills, including the skills needed for field work, makes students actually do field work, and is completed with a substantial thesis and preparation of an academic publication.

See for more information on the programme the description of the Research master African Studies at the African Studies Centre.
