Iris Houben en Hetty ten Oever hebben een bijdrage geschreven voor het boek Socio-Economic Human Rights in Essential Public Services Provision. In hun bijdrage onderzoeken zij de relatie tussen de verplichtingen inzake publieke dienstverlening in de EU wetgeving (PSO’s) en de mensenrechten.

Op woensdag 15 september promoveert Jinxian Wang op haar proefschrift: Trends in social assistance, minimum income benefits and income polarization in an international perspective.

Dit proefschrift gaat over de bescherming van sociaaleconomische belangen onder de klassiek geformuleerde grondrechten die zijn neergelegd in het Europees Verdrag voor de Rechten van de Mens (EVRM; Verdrag).

Studievoorlichting

Op zaterdag 13 februari zijn, tijdens de dies voor alumni in het Kamerling Onnes Gebouw in Leiden, de Leidse Universitaire Scriptieprijzen 2016 uitgereikt. De eerste prijs werd gewonnen door historicus Kaspar Pucek. De kwaliteit van zijn scriptie werd ‘overweldigend’ genoemd.

Het oplossen van maatschappelijke vraagstukken vereist vaak een degelijke multidisciplinaire voorbereiding. De specialisatie Economics and Governance, aangeboden door de afdeling Economie en het Instituut Bestuurskunde, combineert inzichten uit beide disciplines.

De Afdeling Economie verzorgt onderwijs in verschillende opleidingen.

Politieke partijen willen de arbeidsmigratie terugdringen zonder de Nederlandse economie te schaden. Maar is dat wel mogelijk? Hoogleraar Economie Olaf van Vliet sprak met de NOS over de afwegingen en gevolgen van beperkende maatregelen.

De 260 jaar oude wetenschappelijke prijs van het Legatum Stolpianum wordt dit jaar toegekend aan twee goed geschreven historische studies van hoge kwaliteit, met actuele betekenis. Een van de winnaars is de Leidse classica Tazuko van Berkel.
