The Soviet famine that climaxed in 1933 ended the lives of millions of people in Ukraine but was kept quiet and it remained a state secret for almost half a century.

Research since the opening of the Soviet archives has provided a better understanding of what happened, and why, and how its memory evolved. In independent Ukraine, the Holodomor is a central marker of national identity.

Please join us for engaging presentations by two of the world’s leading experts, who both know the record and have done field work in Ukraine. Taking place close to Ukraine’s annual Holodomor Memorial Day, this public event shows where the research stands, and is an opportunity to note which questions and challenges remain, for scholars and for Ukrainian society alike.

Dr. Daria Mattingly (Ph.D. University of Cambridge) is an expert on the rank and file Soviet activists who made the Holodomor happen. A native of Ukraine, she is Lecturer in Contemporary History at the University of Chichester, UK.

Dr. Karolina Koziura (Ph.D. The New School for Social Research) is an expert on the decades-long, transnational struggle to recognise the Holodomor as a form of political violence. A native of Poland, she is Petro Jacyk Postdoctoral Fellow, Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, University of Toronto.

The discussion will be moderated by Prof. Dr. Karel Berkhoff (Leiden University and NIOD).
