Vacancy Student Assistant for the Intelligence Research Group (16 hrs a week)

The Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) of the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs is looking for a Student Assistant to support data collection and processing for a research project on “Open-source research and the war in Ukraine: intelligence for the people by the people?”. The project is led by Dr. Damien Van Puyvelde, within the Intelligence Research Group at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs.

Key Responsibilities

· Assist with the manual collection of data online (social media platforms, and websites)
· Assist with the recording and processing of the data as a part of a database
· Provide organisational assistance for the project workshop (May 2024)
· Assist with other ad hoc research and administrative tasks that might arise in the course of the project.

Selection Criteria

· The candidate is fluent in English.
· The candidate has a BA in Security Studies or a related discipline
· The candidate currently is a Master’s student at Leiden University, preferably following the Crisis and Security Management programme.
· The candidate has good knowledge of contemporary intelligence issues, especially open-source intelligence (OSINT) and social media intelligence (SOCMINT).

Intelligence and Security Research Group

The student assistant will join the Intelligence and Security research group at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA). Our research group is comprised of a number of academic researchers and practitioners who share a research interest in intelligence studies. Our core teaching activities within ISGA focus upon the Minor in Intelligence Studies and the new specialization track in Intelligence and National Security on the Crisis and Security Management (CSM) MSc programme. We also occasionally contribute to other teaching programmes within ISGA. You can find more information about the research group on the website.

The candidate will work under the guidance and supervision of Dr. Damien Van Puyvelde, the principal investigator for the project “Open-source research and the war in Ukraine: intelligence for the people by the people?”.

Terms and conditions

The period will be from 1 November 2023 to 30 May 2024 for 16 hours a week.

The contract and the conditions will be passed through the employment agency Jobmotion and the salary will be at the SA4 (Master student assistant) level € 15.86 p/h.
